- Anatomically correct model of a 2 kg, 40 cm new-born female baby developed to review the principles, skills and tools necessary for insertion, assessment, dressing care, securement and maintenance of vascular access devices (VAD) in infants, including:
- Standard venipuncture
- Central venous catheter
- Peripherally inserted central catheter
- Umbilical catheter
- Median basilica and axillary veins are accessible on both right and left arms
- Model’s right leg includes the saphenous and popliteal veins
- Frontal, post auricular, temporal (scalp) and external jugular veins are equally realistic in the neck and head area
- Vein size and wall thickness provide the realistic feel and appearance of a new-born
- Underlying blue veins are visible through simulated, translucent skin
- Veins are self-sealing, enabling them to be accessed repeatedly with a small gauge needle
- A ‘pop’ is felt as needle enters the vein, followed by a realistic flashback of artificial blood confirming proper needle placement
- All veins allow the opportunity to practise blood withdrawal, fluid infusion and flushing
- A unique feature of the simulator is a lifelike umbilicus allowing the repeated accessing of the umbilical vein, with proper placement verified by a blood return
- An umbilical tape can be tied around the umbilicus to secure the catheter
- Nasal and oral openings are present for placement of nasal cannulas, nasogastric tubes and feeding tubes, permitting teaching and practising of suctioning, securing, dressing and cleansing
